Two thirds of the world’s population has no readily accessible medical and surgical care. That’s where Mercy Ships come in. This international non-governmental organisation (NGO) operates the world’s largest civilian hospital ships to provide free, life-changing surgical care and medical training in developing nations, primarily across sub-Saharan Africa where so many of the population lacks access to care. Two ships are currently operating in the fleet with plans in place for a third.
Able to access coastal regions and relocate quickly if there is any local danger all of the services are free by the volunteers. Roles cover a wide range of positions on the ship; surgeons, cooks, teachers for on-board schools, shops, hairdressers etc. Ship’s crew are paid employees.
Founded in 1978 by Don and Deyon Stephens, Mercy Ships provide free, first-class medical care and training. Volunteer nurse Monica Prague highlighted the organization’s work, which is powered by over 1,000 volunteers and aims to address the 33% of global deaths caused by lack of timely medical attention.
