Two Ukrainian servicemen, Nazar “Kapa” and Victor “Blacksmith”, were severely injured while defending Ukraine. Their full names are withheld for safety reasons. Nazar, a drone operator in the 22nd Separate Mechanised Brigade, was wounded when a Russian FPV kamikaze drone struck his trench, killing a comrade and injuring another. After 10 surgeries in Ukraine, Nazar was flown to Sydney for advanced reconstructive surgery at Macquarie University Hospital. His recovery, including intensive rehabilitation, was made possible through Australian community support.
Victor lost both legs due to artillery fire near Chasivar. Despite the trauma, he was quickly flown to Sydney for life-saving surgery. With community help and prosthetic support, Victor recently returned to Australia to receive new prosthetics and even climbed Mount Kosciuszko the day after the final fitting..
Their stories highlight the work of the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations (AFUO), which coordinates aid and advocacy for Ukraine. With strong community and government backing, including support from Rotary, Australia has been generous—with over $1.5 billion in aid so far (including military supplies and equipment).
Kateryna Argyrou, co-chair of the AFUO, spoke to Mosman Rotary at its meeting this week. She said that the AFUO had raised millions in humanitarian and non-lethal military aid. Their “Defend Ukraine” appeal has supported over 50 brigades with drones, vehicles, and supplies.
Kateryna said “we’re also advocating for displaced Ukrainians, pushing for permanent residency pathways, education support, and recognition of foreign qualifications.” She noted that Australians could help by advocating for the government to continue support. She said ” it takes literally five minutes. All it takes is just an email to your local MP to say that you live in this electorate, you
support, Ukraine, and that you would like to see the Australian government provide
more aid to Ukraine”.
