Every month, we bring you a local artist of Mosman, home of Mosman Rotary Club.
For the month of May 2022, we bring you Vera Robinson.
Vera is a Croatian born sculptor whose family originated on the Dalmatian coast and now lives in Sydney, educated in engineering and continued her professional career in Australia, Vera had the motivation and opportunity for creative expression here.
She studied and worked in 1980’s and subsequently developed her art education travelling to study sculpture with artists, at exhibitions around the Mediterranean, Venice, Central Europe and the Pacific.
Her education in sculpture included with Tom Bass and other Australian artists over the last 30 years including at the Ku-ring-gai and Willoughby Arts Centres, working in clay, stone, bronze, stainless steel and recently in encaustic covered more natural forms, exhibiting with the Sculpture Society since 2010, award winning at the Gallery 307 and Art Space.
The earthy, tranquil, solid form, with elements of the Australian bush with modern Croatian influences, but overall simplified. Vera was exposed to the art of Henry Moore, Mestrovic and Rodin who became her role models, influenced by the abstract yet lifelike shapes in nature, the observation of forests, termite breakdown of ancient trees. Vera’s observation of nature with daily walks, her gathering of found objects
showing beauty in the destruction of nature, change of textures evocative of the cycle of life, she is uncovering forms to return to the tradition of repurposing woodworking in different medium to create fresh art.
Awakening is a wonderful example of Vera’s handling of female subjects. This meditative pose with soft forms is characteristic of how she depicts female sensuality.
Bush Phoenix shows a great contrast of her skills and interpretations. Compared to the stylized Awakening, this is naturalistic and raw. In this work, her immense emotionality and variety of styles are evident.
Statement:
Vera is inspired by the earthy, tranquil, solid forms, with elements of the Australian bush expressed with modern Croatian influences, yet overall simplified.
Enjoy Vera’s art.
