Mosman Artist of the month of June/July 2022 – Gerald Christmas

Gerald’s lifetime legal career, a partnership in a busy city law firm and family responsibility delayed his opportunities to follow his interest in art. In 1998 Gerald retired from his firm when he turned 60. Studies at Bathurst at Winter/Summer School and Mosman Evening College were followed with numerous other workshops. Later he attended classes at Willoughby Art School. He joined a group of artists on painting trips to the Kakadu country. The colours and contours of the magical landscape captivated his interest and he enjoyed further travels into the Kimberley ranges, Alice Springs and Queensland capturing the beauty of the landscape in his work . Gerald was involved in the incorporation of the Mosman Art Society and entered one his first landscapes of the Outback near Alice Springs later that year. He was Vice President for 6 years and in December 2005 was elected President which continued for 10 years.

In the early years of the Millennium, Gerald’s art developed with a new focus. It was on his doorstep. He had moved house in 1993 to Balmoral. Soon after, the sights and sounds of Balmoral rewrote his art agenda for the next twenty years. The people, the pavilion, the Rotunda, the beaches, the boathouse, the rocks, the water, the bridge, the island, the weddings, the trees, the pelicans, the square men, the curvy girls, the sailors, the swimmers, the sunbakers, the families, the boats….. the list goes on.
