Monday’s Speaker - The Frankenstein Law - Philip Lawrence

There is no doubt the world is facing several critical issues. We have left behind an era of extraordinarily low interest rates, and now charting new waters of increasing rates and super charged inflation challenging the global economy. The pent-up tension between the west and the east, challenging international security. Global inequality of wealth, challenging the poorest people and nations. Runaway technologies that have recently been described by some commentators as useless goods, Frankenstein artificial intelligence. And of course, climate change, we have a target, (meaning the world) but what are the chances, a challenge for future generations?

Phillip will present his research into why the 1862 Company Act in the UK is the root cause of all these problems. The law was suddenly introduced and passed without adequate debate. According to some, it was the single greatest human invention, and to others it was the darkest moment in human history. Phillip calls it the ultimate Frankenstein law, a monster wreaking havoc on the world over generations. It was the promise the creature made to Dr Frankenstein in repayment for being created in the first place.

Phillip Lawrence worked in international business areas in the US and Europe up until 2007 when he began academic research into a theory of modernising societies.

He is a founder and director of a Bio-Medical technology business. Interests in innovative energy technologies in energy saving, storage, and production.

He lectures at the University of Sydney on Globalisation and Governance in the department of Government and International Relations. His research interests are in the future of capitalism, politics of climate change, and imbedded inequality.

HARDING MILLER AWARDS NIGHT 2023

President Mark Wallis, PP Dom Rabu and PP Di McKenzie-Rabu attended the HARDING MILLER AWARDS CELEBRATION for 2023 held at Sofitel Sydney Wentworth on Monday 26 June. They were able to meet our club’s sponsored student Olivia Quince from Coomealia High School NSW who is now in Year 12 and aspiring to be an archaeologist, studying through either UNSW or UMELB.

This event celebrated the 1,000 Scholarship awarded by HMEF, since the Foundation’s inception in 2016 – a remarkable achievement which continues to improve education equity for high potential girls facing hardship, while supporting public education in Australia for scholars from Year 9 to Year 12.

Photos taken on the night show President Mark, PP Dom and PP Di taken with HMEF Managing Director Cara Varian, also with our sponsored student Olivia, as well as the Thanks to Donors slide showing The Rotary Club of Mosman’s logo.

New Promotional stand for markets - Thanks to Zali Steggall MP

The club is greatly appreciative to Zali Steggalls office and the federal government for providing the Club a grant as part of the Stronger Communities Programme. As a result we have received funding to update our promotional stand which will include a full frame which will be logoed all sides, a back drop sheet logoed, a table cover logoed and 2 tear drop and a pull up banner.

(Also many thanks to Treasurer David who inspired this and did all the work!!)

Australian of the Year Awards Nominations

DGE Christine has asked that we pass this on to all members; any suggestions can be passed on to the board who will consider the issue at next week’s board meeting.

The National Australia Council have reached out asking for Rotary to help spread the message that nominations close on 31st July for the 2024 Australian of the Year Awards.

See attached a digital toolkit with some helpful links to videos or tile assets that could be used for engagement on a social media post or in a newsletter. There are also some suggested captions.

To nominate someone, please go to: https://nom.australianoftheyear.org.au/3C91Wif

Anything you can do to help spread their message would be greatly appreciated

Banners From Our Past - The Rotary Club of Church Wilne

PP Rob has made strenuous efforts to preserve the many banners (approx 2000) donated to our club from visiting Rotarians. Hopefully he will soon produce an article about the reasons why we were able to accumulate so many. In the meanwhile he has provided another sample:

Some information about the club in question:

The Rotary Club of Church Wilne was chartered in 1985 being the daughter club of Long Eaton Rotary Club. The first President was Paul Harris Fellow Roger Graham and the inaugural Charter held at Grange Farm, Toton under the watchful eye of District Governor Arnold Crosby. We started by meeting Monday evenings at the Rose and Crown, Draycott moving on to the Blue Ball, Risley. Bartlewood Lodge, Spondon. Tudor Court, Draycott and finally to where we are now, The Royal Oak, Ockbrook.
