On behalf of the Headland Preservation Group (HPG) the Mosman Art Gallery is delighted to invite our members and friends to a special exhibition, Veterans’ Stories, occurring next week at the Landship Gallery, Middle Head, Mosman.

Exhibition Dates

Tuesday 25 April, ANZAC Day following the Dawn Service

Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 April, 10am – 3pm

Location

Landship Gallery (adjacent to Frenchy’s Café in the Georges Heights Artist Precinct)

The Project

Last weekend Headland Preservation Group ran a successful art workshop titled Open Studio – Veterans’ Stories. The workshop was the initiative of HPG and was brought to fruition via the funds raised at the HPG 25th Anniversary Dinner held in November 2022. The project was fortunate to have the professional input of renowned artist Richard Lewer. HPG is delighted to report that all participants seemed to find the workshop a very positive experience (albeit occasionally emotional, as they re-lived some of their more difficult days in the service of our country).

HPG would like to invite you to view the art exhibition at the Landship Gallery, Middle Head on ANZAC DAY Tuesday 25th April 2023 following the Dawn Service, and on the weekend of 29/30 April 2023, 10am-3pm each day. The HPG thank those community donors who contributed to this very worthwhile project.

Monday’s Speakers: Rob Sturrock Re Anzac Day - Women and Children Left Behind Plus the National Youth Science Forum

PP Rob Sturrock will be giving a short Anzac orientated talk on Women and Children left behind when their menfolk went off to war in 1914-18.

Anica Wong + Bethany Walker on the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF)

Anica and Bethany are from Queenwood School for Girls. Our club sponsored each of them with $500 towards the fee for the NYSF Year 12 program.

The NYSF is a not-for-profit organisation that runs a number of programs to encourage young people in their passion for science. Rotary is the Founding Partner of NYSF and today the 21 local Rotary districts across Australia continue to conduct selections for the NYSF Year 12 Program on behalf of the NYSF.

The NYSF is delivered by youth for youth. Past participants return each year to participate in the Student Staff Leadership Program and help run the program the year after they first attend. https://nysf.edu.au/programs/year-12-program

The program that Anica & Bethany attended ran on weekdays between 10-24 January 2023 and was delivered as a mixed-mode experience – a combination of in-person and digital events.

Throughout the program, participants engaged with optional activities such as the STEM Challenges, The Great Debate and the NYSF Talent Show.

Zone 8 Regionalisation Pilot Receives Financial Support from Rotary International Board

The Regionalisation Pilot Project Team Co-chairs Ingrid Waugh (NZ/Oceania) and Peter Frueh (Australia) have issued the following update:

Following our all member communication on 14 March, the Regionalisation Core Team
submitted the business case to the Rotary International Board on 11 April 2023, seeking financial commitment to commence the pilot.

We are pleased to advise that the RI Board received the regional pilot proposal for Zone 8 and approved funding subject to annual review.

Following the Council on Legislation vote and club endorsement in 2022, this was the final step needed for approval for the pilot to proceed to the establishment then implementation phase.

We would like to thank the many volunteer Rotarians and Rotaractors who have willingly given so much of their time over the last four years to get us successfully to this point. Also, a big thank you to the Rotary International staff in Sydney and Evanston who have given invaluable input and support. You have given us all the opportunity to craft a stronger future for Rotary in our Zone.

You will receive further information on next steps in May. If you would like to receive ongoing updates, subscribe here. You can have your say by visiting creatingtomorrowrotary.org or emailing us directly at rotaryregionalpilot@gmail.com.

DISTRICT GRANTS FOR 2023-24

PE James and PP Richard attended the International Meeting at last week’s District Conference. One aspect of the meeting was District Grants. These are funded by the Rotary Foundation but allocated by District. There is a limit of $2500 for domestic projects and $5000 for international projects. Grants are to be matched by club funds so the level of project funding is $5000 for domestic and $10,000 for international.

In order to apply our club has to meet certain criteria; steps are being taken to ensure that we again qualify for a District Grant.

Grant applications have to be submitted by 30th June. This coupled with the fact that P-E James will be overseas for much of June and July means that out club’s board will need to consider which potential applications at the May board meeting. Members should feel free to contact the relevant director with grant proposals but in view of the deadline should do this by the end of April.

District Assembly

District 9685 held the first part of its 2023-24 Assembly on April 15th at Epping Boys High School. Attending from our club were P-E James plus Richard, Barry, Ruth and Derek.

DGE Christine Owen went through various aspects of her plans for the coming Rotary year with emphasis on next year’s Rotary Theme - CREATE HOPE IN THE WORLD.

A significant new initiative that would be progressed throughout our Zone concerns Domestic and Family Violence.
