Rotary Health Bequest from PP Ian Fitzpatrick

Our beloved member Past President Ian Fitzpatrick passed away in August last year. His estate has just made a significant donation to the Australia Rotary Health Research Fund. The fund is closely associated with Mental Health issues.

PP Blair recalls Ian’s involvement with Rotary Health

Perhaps the most important project he brought to the Club was in the year 2000. Ian attended the Rotary District Conference in Tamworth and was inspired by a presentation by the Australian Rotary Health Foundation on Mental Health Awareness. Having been on the Council Senior Safety Committee, where they discussed the problem of suicide in the elderly, and having a keen interest in men’s mental health issues, Ian had the idea of extending the ARHF concept to the general public. With the co-operation of the Foundation and Mosman Council, the Club held a series of “Mind Matters” seminars for the general public. These generated very positive feed-back and laid the platform for hundreds of similar seminars being hosted by Rotary Clubs across Australia. As the issues suicide and men’s mental health are now regularly addressed in both print and electronic media it is easy to forget that this was not the case 25 years ago. Ian’s actions in creating the ‘Mind Matters’ seminars was an important step in bringing these issues from behind closed doors and into the public domain.

Club and District Changeovers are fast approaching

Late June every year is a time of change in the Rotary world.

At that time of the year, all 34,000 Rotary Clubs around the World conduct a Changeover ceremony which brings NEW leadership, NEW ideas, a NEW theme and renewed vitality to each Club. This changeover of leadership occurs throughout Rotary at Club, District and International level.

Due to his travel plans incoming President James will be organizing our club changeover on Friday 2nd June. The venue is Northbridge Golf Club, 296 Sailors Bay Rd., Northbridge which has ample parking. The timing of the dinner is 6.30pm for 7.00pm with a finish time of 10.30pm. Dress code is Black tie or lounge suit.

The cost is $90pp which covers welcome drinks, meal and wine. Please pay into our club’s general account using your name as reference; please also send an email to PP James and Treasurer Dave confirming the booking.

The District Changeover Dinner is at a more normal date, Saturday 1st July but this year will be lunch between 12.00 and 4.00pm at Rydges Norwest Hotel 1 Columbia Court, Baulkham Hills. Cost is $60pp. Please contact President Mark if you wish to go so that we can arrange to car share and table bookings.

Become a Centurion and help towards our Rotary Foundation commitment

Our club regularly commits to a contribution to the Rotary Foundation and over the years has derived significant benefits in the form of District and International matching grants.

One way of helping is through the Centurion Program. This was initiated many years ago by the districts in Australia and New Zealand. It’s an easy way for all Rotarians to support their charity: The Rotary Foundation. The program asks members to make a yearly contribution of A$100 or more to the Foundation’s Annual Fund.

And any contribution is tax deductible!

For every $100 contributed in Australia and New Zealand, A/NZ Rotarians have received grants of $183 to support their projects! Think of the Foundation as your Impact Multiplier.

It’s pretty easy to add your $100 when checking into Monday’s lunch. Alternatively you can send $100 to our clubs Project Account with Bendigo Bank and let PP Richard and Treasurer Dave know by email.

Marco at the SCG for Swans vs GWS

Ruth and Barry took Marco to experience an AFL game at the SCG on Saturday. Unfortunately for our team of Sydney Swans supporters, Giants star Toby Greene kicked a clutch goal in stunning fashion just before the final whistle to snap a two-game losing streak against their crosstown rivals.

This was an ideal opportunity to show Marco a unique aspect of Australian life. Let’s all look for other opportunities to make his year down under into a great life enhancing experience.
