Past President Di McKenzie-Rabu is pleased to give our club an update on HMEF
In 2022 Harding Miller Education Foundation has supported our biggest group of students with over 500 scholarship recipients on the program.
The above map shows where our scholarship recipients are located in every state and territory. On the program this year, 40% of students are from non-English speaking backgrounds, 16% identify as First Nations Australians, 10% have experienced out-of-home care, 9% have experienced domestic violence, 6% have a disability and 5% have told us they experience mental health concerns

Class of 2022
HMEF is very proud of our Class of 2022
Welcome to 2023
HMEF Hits 1000 Scholarships!
At the Harding Miller Education Foundation (HMEF) we are very excited about this year and everything that we have planned for our scholars and supporters.
We are proud to announce that in 2023, the Foundation will award our 1,000th scholarship since starting in 2016. This is an amazing achievement and it is because of you, our wonderful supporters, that this has been possible.
In 2023 we will have 613 girls on our program from Years 9-12, this includes 199 new scholarships for girls entering Year 9 in 2023.
In 2023 we have introduced a brand new type of scholarship for 40 students who will receive a “gold scholarship”. These gold scholarships are additional scholarships beyond our current model and have been introduced to ensure that an extra 40 extremely talented and dedicated students - who would have otherwise missed out - will receive a Harding Miller Education scholarship. In Years 9 and 10, the gold scholarship recipients will have access to all of the tools and resources of the scholarship with the exception of tutoring. Access to tutoring will be available to them in their important senior years of high school.
Of the 199 girls receiving a new scholarship in 2023, 38% come from a non-English speaking background, 35% are from regional or rural Australia, 24% have experienced domestic violence, 13% are first nations girls, 9% are from a refugee background and 6% have been in or are in foster care.
Our Program Team are currently collating the girls' commencement surveys and distributing scholarship information packs and tools. We are looking forward to working with our newest group of scholars!

Our guest speakers last Monday 30 February were Vikram Chowdhary, Head of Fundraising & Marketing with Clown Doctors, and Tricia Fortier who received an OAM for over 20 years of volunteer work with Scouts and The Humour Foundation.
Vikram Chowdhary, Tricia Fortier Thanked by Rotarian Surinder Jain
Their joint presentation gave us an excellent overview of the work carried out by both Clown Doctors and The Humour Foundation, reinforcing the need to engage at all levels and with all generations – “Laughter is the best medicine!”
We spread 'doses' of fun and laughter to people in need across Australia, improving the quality of life for people in hospitals, health and aged care facilities. International research has demonstrated the physiological and psychological benefits of laughter to health and well-being, and this underpins our evidence based practice. "Plenty of studies have shown that laughter can combat many common ills. For instance, research suggests that humour may lower blood pressure and release endorphins. Laughter is also proven to improve circulation, stimulate the nervous system, heighten the immune system and make the heart stronger." The late Dr Peter Spitzer, Medical Director & Co-founder, The Humour Foundation.
A recent study conducted by Social Ventures Australia shows that for every $1 invested into our Clown Doctors program in clinical spaces, there's a $9.90 social return to the community.

Help Rotary recruit peace and development leaders
You can help promote peace in the world by encouraging peace and development leaders in your community to apply for the Rotary Peace Fellowship.
Each year, Rotary awards fully funded fellowships for peacebuilders from diverse backgrounds to study at one of our peace centers located at premier universities around the world. This year, we’ll select 50 peace fellows to study in our master’s degree programs and 40 fellows to earn a professional development certificate.
Rotary Peace Fellows use their training to amplify their work at the local, regional, or global level. Clubs and districts can partner with them on peacebuilding initiatives before, during, and after their fellowships.
But we need your help finding candidates. Rotary and Rotaract members can get involved by:
Thanks to generous support from donors and the dedicated participation of Rotary members, the peace fellowship program has more than 1,600 alumni working to make positive change in more than 140 countries.
To learn more about how you can recruit the next generation of peace fellows, contact your district Rotary Peace Fellowship subcommittee chair or write to rotarypeacecenters@rotary.org.
