John Dean was born in Newcastle on the 30Dec 1944 and passed away on 25 January 2022 aged 77. He attended Newcastle Boys High before undertaking an exchange at a boarding school in New England, USA. Returning to Australia, he studied law at Sydney University where he met his future wife Judy, a fellow law student.
The Deans settled in Mosman where they raised their three sons, Jonathan, Nicholas & James and daughter Julia.
John was born a volunteer and devoted himself to supporting his children by being involved in P & C’s and scouting. He was President of Neutral Bay Public School P & C and served of group captain for both 1st Mosman and 3rd Mosman Sea Scouts. John enjoyed 4 Wheel driving, yachting and kayaking and in the late nineties raised tens of thousands of dollars by competing in the Hawkesbury Classic, a kayaking paddle from Windsor to Brooklyn.
John’s daughter, Julia was selected by our Club to attend RYLA in January 2003 and as a result, John was encouraged to join Rotary and was inducted into our club on 8 April 2003. In record time John took on the office of President for the 2005/6 Rotary year.
John took a keen interest in SHELTER BOX and for several years was the District Shelter Box Chairman. District 9685 awarded him a Sapphire Pin for his Paul Harris Fellowship in recognition of his work for SHELTERBOX.
John and Judy’s 3rd son, James died in 2009 at the age of 30 and the 3rd Mosman Sea Scout Hall has been named in his honour.
John was never short of a word or to share a jock and will greatly missed by his family, his fellow Rotarians and the Mosman Community as a whole.

A project of the Rotary Clubs of Sydney
Don’t miss meeting the former Chief of Australia’s Defence Force - Admiral (Retired) Chris Barrie AC - who will discuss Climate Change & Sovereign Risk and how it will directly impact Australia & the Pacific, Bangladesh, Europe and the world. And with our two other speakers, Admiral Barrie will outline what we can do about it.
Is there a gender bias for climate action? Zara Bending, Senior Lecturer at Macquarie University and expert in International Environmental Law, believes so – and will speak on how the law might help mitigate against these risks.
Together with Prof Will Steffen, an international environment researcher from the Climate Council – who will speak about ‘tipping points’ - you will come away with ideas about how you can make a difference.

The announcement on 16 September of the historic AUKUS Alliance a trilateral security partnership, caught us all by surprise. In hindsight however, its origin can be traced to recent political events and the rapidly changing strategic military environment. The first major initiative of the Alliance is to assist Australia to acquire at least eight nuclear powered submarines with the US and UK helping with technology transfer. Exactly how that will be done is not yet clear as Vice Admiral Johnathan Mead AO has been appointed as the Chief of Nuclear-Powered Submarine Task Force to conduct an 18-month study to “define the optimal path to acquire the submarines.” It will be a challenging project as the intention is to build all the submarines in South Australia in time to take over from the current Collins Class submarines as they retire from service.
Peter will cover a broad sweep from the origin of the Alliance and the regional reactions to it with an overview of the two options available, the US Virginia Class and the UK Astute Class, outlining their roles and capabilities followed by a short review of the support facilities, also covering nuclear safety.

The Australian Submarine HMAS Rankin (Hull 6)
Presenter - John Peter Bullard
Peter spent 35 years as an engineer officer in the Royal Navy. He qualified as a conventional submariner and as the RN nuclear submarine program expanded, undertook an advanced marine engineering course studying nuclear submarine reactor design. His sea time in nuclear submarines finished with a nine-month unsupported deployment to the Far East. He followed by lecturing to engineer officers undergoing nuclear propulsion training before moving to the nuclear operational safety section. His design time was spent as the head of the future submarine nuclear propulsion plant section working on the as then unnamed, Astute Class machinery design. In London in the Naval Staff Operational Requirements Directorate, he managed the concept studies for the Astute class. Peter became an Australian citizen in 2009.
