It is with great sorrow we record the death of our esteemed member Past President Ian Fitzpatrick, PHF who passed away peacefully on Tuesday 16 August surrounded by his extended family.
Ian, a well-respected local doctor, joined the Rotary Club of Mosman on 12 June 1978 with the classification of General Medical Practice and has been an active member ever since.
He joined the Board of the Club in 1978 as Youth Service Director and was a key link between the Rotary Club and Rotaract Club. In July 1980 Ian took on the position of Club President and his enthusiasm and dedication to role ensured the Club had an exciting and rewarding year of service. During his year, the Club was deeply involved in international exchanges with a Group Study Exchange representative in Brazil, a Youth Exchange Student in Japan and a Rotary Foundation Scholarship to Cambridge. The year also saw the successful launch of one of the Club’s most successful International Service Projects, building a Secondary School in Zimbabwe. The project was funded by an auction and market day at Mosman High School and much of the year had Rotarians out and about in Mosman collecting donated furniture and brick a bac for sale on the day.
Following his year of Presidency, Ian continued to be very involved in Club activities and there is no better example of this than his role as a member of the “No Drugs” task force which produced a drug education video “Out of Control” designed to strengthen the resolve of children between 10 and 14 years to say “No” to their first offer of drugs. This project, conducted jointly with the Rotary Club of Balmoral was funded at a cost of $130 000 and was honoured for outstanding community service in the 1989 Herald Service Club Awards.
For many years Ian’s home in Coronation Avenue became the hub of Rotary activity as he hosted numerous exchange students, underprivileged children from the Far West, indigenous medical students, Club Christmas parties, Melbourne Cup luncheons, Board meetings and Club Assemblies. On top of all this, throughout his time in the Club Ian was always on hand to sell raffle tickets, cook at Rotary Barbeques, promote the Rotary Bowelscan project and transport students to events such as MUNA, RYLA and RYPEN, .
Ian was an inspiration to us all, a devoted and much-loved family man, a well-respected family GP and a lifelong community volunteer. In recognition of his standing in the community the Rotary Club of Mosman honoured with a Paul Harris Fellowship with two Sapphire pins and Mosman Council named him Citizen of the Year in 2009.

Members of the Rotary Club of Mosman attended the National Tree Planting Day Day 2022. It was decided that Rotary could make a contribution to this event in Mosman.
A small group, President Mark, Treasurer David with Shirley and myself decided to join the activity. It did take a while to find the location because there are two Ashton Parks in Mosman and we all turned up at the one overlooking Mosman Bay. There was no one there and then we discovered Little Ashton Park is located beside Taronga Zoo.
When we found the correct location we were pleased to see that there was a large number of tree planters at work – with a at least 20 families, some with small children, putting their hands together to plant the small tree plants that had been supplied by Mosman council.
In the end it was a job well done with nearly 500 small plants all dug into the bushland area outside Taronga Zoo.
Mayor Carolyn Corrigan was in attendance, and we had a quick photo taken of Rotarians at work with their gardening skills.

06 Sep - Club meeting presentation: 1979 The Iranian Revolution
Iran past and Present: a talk by the author Cindy Davies
Cindy’s PowerPoint presentation illustrates how Iran, a monarchy for 2,500 years, became an Islamic Republic almost overnight in 1979.
She has written two novels based in Iran: The Afghan Wife and The Revolutionary’s Cousin, published in 2017 and 2019. The second novel follows her characters on their journey from Iran.
Born in the UK, Cindy has lived, worked and travelled in Turkey. She emigrated to Australia with her family in 1975 and is a graduate of Sydney University. She’s worked as a teacher, freelance writer and tour guide in Sydney and Turkey. Cindy visited Iran for further research in 2014.
She has just finished a third novel set in the Topkapı Palace harem in sixteenth-century Istanbul and is working on her fourth.

We have to thank Hans Kunnen for his personal account of that historic day 21 years ago. I believe we all have stark memories of that day that changed so many lives.
It is hard to imagine how we individually would feel if we had witnessed first-hand such a tragic event. His presentation was indeed emotional. The character of New York changed from that day forward.
As someone who used to visit New York on business in the 1980s and who dined at Windows on the World which was the dining complex on Level 107 of the North Tower, I was deeply moved by his description of how that destruction took place. Also his gratitude to the American lady who gave him a place to stay and helped him recover from that horrific event
We trust that such a tragic event will never be repeated in our lifetime, thank you Hans for your story

This is a mid-year Scholarship Report concerning our student
“Being awarded this scholarship has given me much needed resources that have improved my own educational environment. It has enabled me to work more efficiently and effectively in school and allowed me access to opportunities that have made me connect with my future endeavours, and this has ultimately facilitated change in my life. I have been granted an avenue where I am allowed to solely focus on achieving my own academic pursuits, by being granted with resources and supplies that have alleviated financial difficulties within my family. The laptop, broadband, prepaid card, tutoring, and other resources and opportunities have greatly assisted me”
Our Student is interested in a career in marine biology and/or environmental journalism.
She aims to achieve this through studying a Bachelor of Science or Masters in Marine Science and Management at The University of New South Wales or The University of Wollongong
Message from Harding Miller Education Foundation Scholarship Program Manager
Our year 11 cohort of scholars have settled in well to their new status as senior students at their schools. To assist in this transition from year 10, we extended an invitation to all our year 11 girls to attend an online study skills seminar focussing especially how to best manage their time and the increasing intensity of their schoolwork and associated commitments. This was followed by the opportunity to work on a range of career-profiling assessments and follow up interviews with careers counsellors – an opportunity to explore their strengths and interests and focus of a wide variety of career possibilities not typically explored at a school level. The group continue to show great resilience and maturity considering they have had to deal with COVID-disrupted learning
