Donation to ENGINEERING AID AUSTRALIA

Acknowledgement of our recent donation to Engineering Aid Australia which conducts Indigenous Australian Engineering Schools in Sydney each year.

“We are so appreciative of the generous gift from the Rotary Club of Mosman. The money will be put to good use as we contact the Science and Careers teachers in every High school in Australia with application forms for the students to apply to attend the Indigenous Australian Engineering Schools (IAES).

Our next two IAES will be in July next year with Sydney University and Curtin University hosting the students.

Please pass on our sincere thanks to all of your members.

Kindest regards
Anne Vans-Colina

Donation of refurbished IT equipment to Mary’s House

Past President Derek Andrew arranged for the donation of a laptop and desktop to Mary’s House which provides support to victims of domestic violence. Derek is evaluating a number of different options to make IT devices available to organisations such as Mary’s House.

Mobile phone support for women in refuges

Following a proposal from Past President Derek Andrew, the Club agreed at its last Board meeting to provide up to $2500 to support the provision of mobile phones for women who go into refuges. The policy of the Women and Children First refuge (which the Club has supported for many years) is to take all mobile phones off the women when they arrive to overcome the risk of the women being traced through their phones. Our offer of the Club’s support was very welcome. The Club is purchasing 5 phones as a trial following on from which it will agree a further roll-out schedule.

---- 21 Nov 2021 update -------

10 mobile phones have been donated by Rotary Club of Mosman to Women and Children First charity. Sue Heins, Chairman wrote a letter on 1oth November 2021 thanking the Rotary club.

ZOOM IN FOR FRIDAY DRINKS

Don’t forget to dial-in each week for Friday drinks from 5pm to 6pm. As the Sydney lockdown continues, this is proving to be a great opportunity for friends to catch-up and share news.

Mosman Rotary Club changeover Dinner 2021

The Rotary Club of Mosman held its annual Changeover dinner on Friday evening, June 25th and at the same time celebrated its 60th anniversary.

MC for the night was Past President Di McKenzie, with introductory Rotary toasts performed by Ruth Thompson and Past President Dominique Rabu.

On behalf of District Governor David Clark, District Governor Elect Lindsay May presented longstanding member Past President Barry Starr with a District Service to Rotary Award for his dedication to Rotary especially in the Youth Exchange program and Barry’s commitment to Service Above Self has been an inspiration not only to Rotarians but to all who know him.

To celebrate the 60-year anniversary of the formation of the Rotary Club of Mosman, Past Presidents Rob Sturrock and Blair Leslie shared Club stories from across the last six decades about service projects.

President Richard Vahtrick thanked all the club members and Board who contributed so much to the significant number of community support projects completed by the Club during the year. This was particularly pleasing given COVID restrictions.

Past President Blair Leslie then presented long-standing Rotarian Chris Gotham with a Paul Harris Fellow recognition for his work as Club Treasurer 3 times, Vocational Service Director, participation in fundraising projects and also his volunteer work with Beyond Blue, the Leukemia Foundation and Pennant Hills Golf Club.

Mark

Richard Vahtrick then formally inducted Mark Wallis into the role of President for the upcoming 2021/2022. Mark talked about the recent Club Assembly which he convened during which members discussed various areas of potential service projects including youth suicide, domestic violence, environment and climate change. Mark presented the incoming Board. He then inducted new member, David Jackson.

The Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron provided yet again a wonderful venue, food, wine & service. We were entertained by Adam Axford, magician and wordsmith. A huge thank you to The Mosman High Jazz Trio and Vocalist for providing beautiful music and song for the event and we were honoured to have as a special guest, the Principal of Mosman High, Susan Wyatt.

SUPPORT FOR VIETNAM - KN95 face masks

Following an approach from our contacts in Vietnam, Danny Low initiated a program to ship new (surplus to requirement) KN95 face masks from Sydney to Vietnam. The face masks are available free thanks to the Medical Repurposing Network which is a project of the Rotary Club of Sydney Cove. Our Club Board has approved a proposal to pay for handling and freight charges for a 20 foot container (300,000 masks) including uplift and collection from the warehouse in Sydney and delivery to Haiphong Port in Vietnam.

------- Update on 5th October 2021 --------

The shipment has arrived and was distributed to two different provinces and as you can see was very well received by our colleagues in Vietnam. Danny is also keeping in touch with the starting up of Rotary in Vietnam which given our Club’s long involvement in medical training in that country should augur well for identification of future potential projects.

HUMANITY IN ACTION

This recent publication celebrates 100 Years of Rotary in Australia, New Zealand and surrounding islands and has some wonderful stories of Rotarians and their projects.
Interplast was formed as a partnership between the Royal Australasian College of
Surgeons and Rotary to operate on disadvantaged children with facial disfigurations
in the Asia Pacific region. Since its formation in 1983 Interplast has held 46,645
consultations, performed 26,817 surgical procedures and 8,894 health treatments in
1,108 program activities. Children whose conditions cannot be treated locally are
referred to Rotary Oceania Medical Aid to Children (ROMAC) for assessment and
potential treatment onshore in Australia and New Zealand.

Shelterbox (formed by the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard, Cornwall UK) is a globally
respected humanitarian organisation providing emergency shelter, essential items
and support to families and individuals. Since 2000, ShelterBox has responded to
disasters and conflicts in 97 countries assisting more than 1.5 million people. Rotary
Australia continues to support Shelterbox Australia with fund-raising as well as direct
program participation .

Two examples of many, which demonstrate how far Rotary has come from its first
community service project – building a male “comfort station” in the main commercial
area of Chicago, right in front of City Hall. (Rotary Club of Chicago 1907)
