Thank you to all those that attended last night’s Changeover to thank the board for all their hard work & to welcome in our new board.
Whilst the numbers were down on previous years, the event was by all accounts a huge success.
Congratulations to Graeme as the recipient of a Paul Harris award, very well deserved.
Thank you to our special guests, DGE Mina Howard & her husband, Larry along with John Zhang.
It was good to see Danny Low and his wife Angeline who was looking very happy & healthy.
Thank you to our new member, David Jackson for stepping up to MC for us, he did a fabulous job (a natural).
Another very special thing happened, we got a new member, Shirley Owles, who is not new to Rotary as she was a member & president of Darling Harbour Rotary. Shirley announced last night, that she was so touched by the mood of the room, she decided that it was time to get back to Rotary. We are delighted to have you in our team Shirley, you will be a huge asset to our club & we welcome you with open arms & warm hearts.
Lastly, thank you to Dom & Di, if they hadn’t worked to tirelessly to get last night happening it would never have happened, so a huge thank you from myself & the members.
I look forward to welcoming you all next Tuesday at our new/old venue,, the Mosman Hotel for what should be a wonderful meeting with a superb speaker Commander Lees (ret), talking. On the Japanese submarine invasion of Sydney Harbour. Please also be aware that Commander Lees has suggested he needs longer than the allocated speaker time, so this meeting is likely to go to approx.. 2.30pm but if any member needs to leave at 2.00pm, that of course is perfectly understood.

Commander Ramon (Ray) Rees RAN ret. Ray is a published author, ‘Once a Sailor’, and for many years has done volunteer work with the Sydney Heritage Fleet.
“Ray Rees spent the majority of his working life, thirty-one years in fact, in the Royal Australian Navy. He enlisted as an apprentice shipwright in 1975. His first seafaring adventure was in the aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne. He went on to graduate from RMIT with a Bachelor’s Degree of Engineering in 1988 before progressing through the commissioned ranks.
Further sea time, including Gulf War I, interspersed with challenging engineering jobs ashore led him to complete two years as the Marine Engineer Officer in the guided missile destroyer HMAS Brisbane II. Completing the RAN Staff Course and an MBA, he was posted to San Diego, spending three and a half years working for the United States Navy in ship repair and project management. Returning to Australia, he managed to sustain eighteen ships, large and small before transferring to the Reserves and moving into the private sector.
You’ll no longer find him in the bowels of a fighting ship, instead you will see him preserving and sailing with the Sydney Heritage Fleet on the 1874 Barque James Craig enjoying the wind and the sun on his face in the beautiful waters around Sydney.”
“On 29 May 1942, five Japanese submarines gathered outside Sydney Harbour. The war was about to come to Sydney. Three midget submarines were launched but only one managed to fire its weapons, one of which sank the ferry HMAS Kuttabul, an accommodation vessel moored at Garden Island. Twenty-one sailors lost their lives.This talk will explain what happened, how it happened and will briefly consider the aftermath. The talk will be given by Commander Ray Rees, RAN Retired. After spending over thirty years in the navy, joining as an apprentice, Ray retired as a Commander Engineer and has continued his interest in marine matters by volunteering with the Sydney Heritage Fleet restoring and crewing in a range of heritage vessels.”
“The Sydney Heritage Fleet is a unique organisation, there is nothing comparable to it anywhere else in the world. The Fleet has eight operational vessels ranging from the 1000 tonne 3 masted barque James Craig to the 26 foot Manly speedboat Kookaburra II. In between there are two steam ships, an Edwardian Gentleman's schooner and three inner harbour launches. All have been restored and are crewed and maintained by the Fleet’s volunteers. The Fleet operates a full-scale shipyard and has recently replaced the riveted hull on the 745 tonne John Oxley, the last Australian coastal steamship. Also under restoration is the 345 tonne inner harbour ferry Kanangra. The Fleet achieves all this without any public funding. Our guest speaker will tell us how they manage all this and much much more”
the Sydney Heritage Fleet operates a panel of expert volunteer speakers and is delighted to provide them to community groups and clubs as requested. The SHF is a small voluntary organisation that receives no state or federal funding and has a very small communications and marketing budget consequently the opportunity to speak to your group is of importance to us.
Sydney Heritage Fleet - A volunteer organisation since 1965, proud winner of local, national and international awards for excellence.
Sydney Heritage Fleet is a signatory to the Statement of Principles for the Recognition of Volunteers.
Donations to the Fleet of $2 or more are tax deductible.

Proposed Resolutions for the 2022 Council on Resolutions will need to be in by Sunday night 26 June to meet the 30 June Deadline.
As you may know, I am the District Council on Resolutions and Council on Legislation Representative. My task is to call for Resolutions and Legislation from Clubs and then have it endorsed and submitted to RI, and then vote on your behalf at the Councils.
First up, please let me apologise for sending this email late - it should have gone out in mid-May to allow you reasonable time to consider whether you wished to submit a Resolution to the RI Board, but with post Council on Legislation paperwork, heading to Houston for the RI Convention, and a bunch of other things, I missed sending the call out to you. There is still time should you wish to submit a Resolution in the truncated timeframe.
The Council on Resolutions meets online every year to vote on proposed resolutions from districts and clubs.
Resolutions are requests to the Board or the Trustees to take an action that is outside the purview of the constitutional documents. Ideally, a resolution should affect the Rotary world, rather than address local or administrative issues. Representatives from all Rotary districts vote on items proposed by clubs, districts, the RI Board, and the general council or conference of RIBI. Adopted resolutions are then considered by the RI Board or The Rotary Foundation Trustees.
As well as being on matters of importance to the Rotary world, Resolutions should avoid recommending that the RI Board or Trustees do things that are already being done or are generally defective iaw the bylaws:
8.070.2. Defective Resolutions. A resolution is defective if it:
- (a) would request an action, or express an opinion, in conflict with the letter or spirit of the constitutional documents;
- (b) would request an action that involves administrative or management matters within the discretion of the board or TRF trustees;
- (c) would request an action which has already been implemented by the board or TRF trustees; or
- (d) is not within the framework of RI’s program.
The attachment has information around framing Resolutions and members should contact me directly to discuss any Resolutions they wish to submit. If they are to me by Sunday night 26 June we have a short turnaround to put them before clubs for endorsement.
I again apologise for overlooking the date to send this email out in mid-May. The next opportunity is mid-May 2023.
