This is my penultimate column and there’s much to report.
Tania and I attended the NSW Police Officer Of the Year Awards (POOTY) Friday 29 April along with 550 guests and acknowledged the remarkable work of so many divisions within the NSW Police Force.
Attending was Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC QC and Mr. Wilson and Commissioner Karen Webb. Both impressive leaders and their presence added to the atmosphere of a dedicated force congratulating and remembering their own.
|
- This is an opportunity to work alongside police, who know what’s happening in your community and where need exists. There’s great membership potential, especially retiring police officers and I urge clubs to identify police in their area and nominate when the awards open. Due to the pandemic, the 2022 awards will be presented in November.
- Rotary Emergency Services Awards (RESCA) close May 10
- Rotary Inspirational Women Awards (RIWA) close June 9

Speaking of inspirational women,
We celebrate all Mothers
Enjoy Sunday May 8th
Our best wishes
and Thank you
Club Anniversaries: 1972 was a very productive year for Rotary in then District 968 with six Clubs chartered in that calendar year. Congratulations to; Gosford North, The Entrance, Richmond, Beecroft, Carlingford and Lindfield now part of Ku-ring-gai. Add to these Epping’s 60th.
Just imagine the positive impact these Clubs alone have had on their communities for over 50 years of service. Thus far we’ve attended The Entrance, then Gosford North and a review of their Service over 50 years is an extraordinary list of achievements and fundraising.
Awards: We don’t join Rotary for recognition but over the years various forms of acknowledgement and awards have been created to recognise those members and Clubs that surpass normal service to their communities. Please review the criteria and make submissions to recognise outstanding effort.

- Golden Quill and Avenue of Service Application forms also on D9685 website.

This appeal will close soon, once we transfer the last dollar. (See breaking news)
To Do List with 8 weeks left in this Rotary year:
|
- DGE Mina Howard requires incoming board positions entered via ClubRunner to enable the district directory to be produced.
- Review your Rotary Foundation, Annual Fund and Polio giving. Four Clubs and/or their members are yet to donate to Annual Fund but of concern, 26 clubs have not yet supported Polio Plus (see David Dean’s report).
- May, June is the time Club board’s review their charitable funding so please include Rotary entities; Australian Rotary Health, ROMAC, RAWCS projects and ShelterBox.
- District Changeover is at Hornsby RSL Saturday 2 July 6.30 for 7pm. Dress in Cocktail wear/ Coat & Tie. We look forward to celebrating your successes and hand over our district in great shape to DGE Mina. REGISTER HERE
- Please keep your Club’s invitations coming in as Tania and I endeavour to accommodate events and make up for the five months in isolation.
Rescheduling due the pandemic means there’s many Club events happening, so I do hope the weather is kind and allows maximum participation for fun runs, outdoor concerts and changeovers. Best wishes for the final push in activities, giving and membership and let’s end with strong results in a challenging year.

RAWCS Flood Appeal for Sydney Region Fundraising Completed!
Thanks to all the clubs and individuals which have helped us exceed the $100,000 target for this project to assist victims of the Sydney region floods!
We are now distributing $500 Woolworths/Big W vouchers to clubs in the affected areas who are working with the local community to provide assistance where it is most needed.
So far, the clubs involved include Windsor (see Press release), The Ponds, Kurrajong/North Richmond, The Hills, and Kariong Somersby. If your club is aware of further needs for flood relief in your area, please contact DG Lindsay May, or Deputy Project Manager David Dean.
If your club has already raised funds specifically for this appeal, but has not yet made a donation, please let me know urgently. We must honour the promises made to donors!
However, if you have raised funds more generally, please consider making your donation to The Rotary Foundation's Annual Fund, Polio Program, or Disaster Response Fund instead.
Although the needs throughout the world seem overwhelming, every dollar we contribute makes a difference in someone's life.
|
Stay safe.
Yours in Rotary
DG Lindsay May and Tania

Our Guest Speaker for Tuesday, 10th May is Paul Gabrielides. Paul is the CEO of Phoenix House ( www.phoenixhouse.org.au ) and recently spoke to the North Sydney Sunrise Rotary Club on 25th of January this year.
|
|
|
Paul Gabrielides CEO of Phoenix House
|
“Many young people need support to stay at school, or to find suitable education or training that meets their needs and aspirations. Early intervention for young people who are struggling in education is critical. If core skills, knowledge, attitudes and behaviors are not developed across childhood and adolescence, they become increasingly difficult and expensive to address later in life.
|
Phoenix House provides early intervention and support services to the most challenged young people living in Sydney and delivers life-changing outcomes.
|
Paul Gabrielides is the CEO of Phoenix House and will explain
|
- the history of the organisation
- the fully integrated, wrap around service model
- how it provides flexible education programs for young people with very specific and challenging needs
- how they catch young people before they fully disengage with formal education and aim to inspire a life-long love of learning
Paul has over twenty years in the corporate world of Information Technology in Sales and Management. Though success was always measured in dollars, he believes real long-term success is measured in a different currency, one of integrity and relationships.
|
His passion to be helpful to people and make his corner of the world a better place burns brightly, so bringing his skills into the NFP sector was a natural step.”

Our speaker for this week is Clyde Campbell from Shake It Up.
|
About Clyde
Clyde is the founder of Shake It Up Australia Foundation and has an entrepreneurial spirit and a vision for the future. Clyde decided not to sit back and wait for the rest of the world to find a cure for Parkinson’s but to join the action. In 2011 he launched Shake It Up Australia Foundation with one mission – to increase awareness and funding in Australia targeted at finding better treatments and ultimately a cure for Parkinson’s.
|
Clyde also wanted to ensure that 100% of all donations received went to Parkinson’s research. This commitment is made possible by Clyde and his brother Greg funding all the administration and overhead costs of the foundation. Since 2011 the foundation has co-funded over $22 Million into Parkinson’s Research in Australia and are now the leading non-government funder of Parkinson’s research across multiple institutes.
|
On 26 January 2021, Clyde was appointed as a Member (AM) of the Order of Australia (General Division) in the Australia Day Honours List, in recognition of his significant service to community health, particularly to people living with Parkinson’s disease.

Every month, we bring you a local artist of Mosman, home of Mosman Rotary Club.
|
For the month of May 2022, we bring you Vera Robinson.
|
Vera is a Croatian born sculptor whose family originated on the Dalmatian coast and now lives in Sydney, educated in engineering and continued her professional career in Australia, Vera had the motivation and opportunity for creative expression here.
|
She studied and worked in 1980’s and subsequently developed her art education travelling to study sculpture with artists, at exhibitions around the Mediterranean, Venice, Central Europe and the Pacific.
|
Her education in sculpture included with Tom Bass and other Australian artists over the last 30 years including at the Ku-ring-gai and Willoughby Arts Centres, working in clay, stone, bronze, stainless steel and recently in encaustic covered more natural forms, exhibiting with the Sculpture Society since 2010, award winning at the Gallery 307 and Art Space.
|
The earthy, tranquil, solid form, with elements of the Australian bush with modern Croatian influences, but overall simplified. Vera was exposed to the art of Henry Moore, Mestrovic and Rodin who became her role models, influenced by the abstract yet lifelike shapes in nature, the observation of forests, termite breakdown of ancient trees. Vera’s observation of nature with daily walks, her gathering of found objects
showing beauty in the destruction of nature, change of textures evocative of the cycle of life, she is uncovering forms to return to the tradition of repurposing woodworking in different medium to create fresh art.
|
Awakening is a wonderful example of Vera’s handling of female subjects. This meditative pose with soft forms is characteristic of how she depicts female sensuality.
|
Bush Phoenix shows a great contrast of her skills and interpretations. Compared to the stylized Awakening, this is naturalistic and raw. In this work, her immense emotionality and variety of styles are evident.
|
Vera is inspired by the earthy, tranquil, solid forms, with elements of the Australian bush expressed with modern Croatian influences, yet overall simplified.
