Monday’s Speakers - Jakob Zaleski on NSW Youth Parliament + Josh Bell on RYLA

Jakob Zaleski. Last year our club gave a small donation to Jakob to assist him participating in the 2023 YMCA NSW Youth Parliament. This is an apolitical program coordinated by the YMCA NSW, and acts as an advocacy platform for young people in New South Walesaged 15 to 18. Participants spend time in Committees developing mock Bills, which they debate during a week-long camp in the NSW Parliament. Bills are given Royal Assent by the Youth Governor and handed to the NSW Government and Opposition for consideration.

Josh Bell RYLA candidate. Josh is 22 years old attended Mosman HS and has been working as a content creator. However he has recently resigned from his position as he is preparing to study for a music degree commencing in 2025 but beforehand is going overseas to visit his sister in Europe. He was nominated and re-elected for the full term as Chair of Canteen Australia’s Youth Advisory Team and is still an active member. He is also a Youth Ambassador and organises programs for young people affected by cancer as a Youth Leader. Our club will be responsible for the cost of Josh participating in the Youth Parliament

HERA SCHOOL CELEBRATION

A brief report from PP Richard in Timor Leste
There was a grand 4 hour celebration to mark the conclusion of the construction phase of the Hera pre-school, with singing and traditional dancing and honours for Barry Starr and myself and of course in absentia to Graeme Robinson and all the donors.
Distinguished guests included an army Lieutenant General, a senior executive from the Department of Education, and senior representatives from the local community and from the Australian and US embassies.
Many members of the local community were there with young children as well so hopefully many will be prospective parents.

And below is a photo of the first classroom:

Wonderful beach info signs at the wishing well

Dear Rotary,
We’re visiting our son who lives here now with his family. One of the highlights of our visits here is walking along the esplanade - a pleasure in any circumstance, but the pleasure has increased tenfold with the discovery of the beach status sign above the wishing well. I’m a retired English teacher and if any of my students had described the ocean as radiant, or today’s whopper - COMELY - I’d have retired on the spot, knowing my job was done. Please extend our thanks to the sign writer.I take a photo every day and I’m sending them to the lifeguard station at our wharf, where our sea conditions are posted, with the admonition that they need to up their game.Again, thanks!
