Dennis is a member of Kenthurst Rotary Club and a volunteer at Shine for Kids. “Some seven years ago, a local friend from Annangrove RFS and I became alarmed at the plight of women and children becoming homeless, so we decided to try and do something about it. Homelessness has become a pandemic and domestic violence seems out of control, with some 110,000 women in NSW over 45 at risk of becoming homeless. The fastest growing cohort of homeless people are women over 55.
|
The urgency to do something about this pandemic is such that the way forward is by community driven projects such as The Hills Transitional Housing Project. Obviously, political decision making has fallen way short of the mark, so this presentation to Mosman Rotary is a part of a call to arms.”

Fellow members, as you are aware our Club has been sponsoring a number of activities in TImor-Leste for quite a period of time and most recently have had a major project underway with the building of the pre-school in Hera, a township around 15 or 20KM from Dili. There will be members from multiple Rotary Clubs traveling to Dili early October to observe and support the annual Timor-Leste RYPEN and RYLA training programs and to visit various Rotary projects including Hera. Attached is a summary of the schedule and if you are interested in participating in this great opportunity for Rotary fellowship please let Richard Vahtrick know and he can provide you with more details of itineraries, sites of interest around Dili and logistics including travel arrangements. All members are encouraged to stay in the same accommodation and each day starts with a discussion over breakfast of who is going where and concludes in the evening at the bar or around the pool with a reflection on the day's events and opportunities for Rotary to provide support. Barry, Richard and his wife Julie all found their earlier trip to Dili to be a life-changing experience. While air fares and accommodation costs and a share of pooled car rentals need to be funded by Club members, all travel insurance costs will be covered by RAWCS which is the vehicle used to fund many of the programs.
